January 18 | Joseph Interprets Dreams

Today’s Reading:

Read Genesis 4042

While Joseph was in prison, God gave him the opportunity to interpret 2 people’s dreams. The King’s
Cupbearer and the Baker were in prison too and had dreams they did not understand. God helped
Joseph know what the dreams meant, and Joseph told the two men so that they would understand.
Joseph asked the men to remember him if they got out of prison, in hopes that he as well would be
released from prison.

Later, Pharoah, the King or Ruler of Egypt, had a dream that he did not understand. He asked all his
leaders to help him. None of them could. The Cupbearer remembered what Joseph had done for him
and told Pharoah. Pharoah released Joseph from prison and God helped Joseph explain Pharoah’s
dreams just like he had done for the Cupbearer.

Pharoah was so grateful for Joseph’s interpretation that Joseph was made an important leader in Egypt.
God had provided for Joseph again just like He always provides for us.

Application/Prayer:

Thank God today for his provision in your life. Make a list of ways God provides for you every day.

January Memory Verse:

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
