September 28 | A Celebration!

Today’s Reading:

Read Nehemiah 8-10

Today’s a day to celebrate! Choose something fun that your family can celebrate today. It can be a birthday, a first lost tooth, the fact that it’s September 28- it doesn’t matter, just celebrate! It is fun to celebrate things, isn’t it?

In our reading today, the Israelites are finally turning back to God. One of the ways they are demonstrating that they want to follow what God has told them to do is by celebrating one of the special feasts that Moses and the Israelites had celebrated while they were in the wilderness. The Israelites celebrated the Feast of the Tabernacle. They also promised to turn back to God and follow Him. They renewed the promise that Moses and the Israelites had made to God so many years before.

Nehemiah was faithful to do what God had called him to do. As a result, the Israelites began the process of turning back to God. All reason to celebrate today, don’t you think?

Application/Prayer:

What did you choose to celebrate? One of the things we can always celebrate is God’s presence in our lives. We know He is always with us and that is a reason to celebrate. Thank God for always being with you and always being willing to forgive you, just like he forgave the Israelites.

September Memory Verse:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
