September 13 | Trusting God even when you don’t understand

Today’s Reading:

Read Daniel 7:1, 15-17; Daniel 8:1-4, 15-19, Daniel 9:1-27

What is the craziest dream you’ve ever had? Do you remember your dreams? Sometimes our mind can play crazy tricks on us in our dreams, can’t it?

In Daniel’s time, dreams were often ways that God would talk to His people. Many would try to interpret what the dreams meant. But God only chose certain people to be able to understand what the visions He sent meant. Remember that Daniel was able to explain what the king’s dreams meant. In today’s reading, Daniel had dreams that he did not understand. God sent an angel to help him interpret what the dream meant.

Daniel’s dreams were visions of how God was going to one day restore the nation of Israel. Daniel prayed that the day when that happened would come soon! Daniel trusted that God was in charge of all things even when he didn’t understand!  We can trust God the same way!

Application/Prayer:

Sometimes trusting God in the middle of hard circumstances is hard, isn’t it? Ask God for the faith to trust Him even when you don’t understandSpend some time thanking Him for always being with you in every circumstance.

September Memory Verse:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
