October 20 | Week 42 Gospel Conversation Opportunity

GOSPEL CONVERSATION OPPORTUNITY

Matthew 16:24 says, “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’”

As a family, discuss what it means to take up your cross and follow Jesus. Compare a cross charm that might be on a necklace with a real cross, similar to the one that Jesus died on. Which cross seems easier to carry?

When Jesus told his disciples that they would need to take up their cross and follow Him, Jesus wanted them to understand that following Him would not be easy. They would have to make sacrifices. It could be challenging. Think of the cross that Jesus carried and the sacrifice He made for us. Thank Jesus for the sacrifice He made on the cross that allowed for us to be able to be forgiven of our sins.

October Memory Verse:

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
