October 19 | Jesus Continued to Teach

Today’s Reading:

Read Matthew 17-18; Mark 9:2-50; Luke 9:25-56

Parents, do you have a memory of a favorite teacher? Share about that teacher with your family and discuss what made that teacher special. Maybe your kids have a teacher they have loved as well. What makes a teacher a “favorite teacher?” Imagine if Jesus was your teacher. He would have a lot to teach us, wouldn’t He?

Jesus continued to demonstrate who He was to the disciples. They recognized Him as the Messiah, but in our reading today, some of the disciples were able to experience hearing the voice of God saying, “This is my beloved Son.”

Jesus also continued to teach the disciples about what it meant to follow God. He taught them the importance of having faith. He wanted them to believe that God would do what He said He would do and that nothing was impossible for God. He also taught them about the faith of a child and how even little children could understand who God was. Jesus compared the love God had for his children to the love a shepherd has for his flock. A shepherd would leave 99 sheep to follow one sheep who was lost, and Jesus wanted the disciples to know that God would do the same. Jesus reminded the people how to pray and how to resolve conflict. And He taught the people the importance of forgiving others.

Application/Prayer:

Jesus had a lot to teach His followers. Can you imagine if Jesus was your teacher? What lesson do you think He would teach you today? Thank Him for continuing to teach us even today through His word!

October Memory Verse:

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
