October 18 | Jesus is recognized as the Son of God

Today’s Reading:

Read Matthew 16; Mark 8:19-9:1; Luke 9:18-27

Let’s brainstorm all we know about Jesus! Set a timer for 30 seconds and challenge each member of your family to make a list of all that they know about Jesus. Whose list was the longest? Who knew the most about Jesus? Did anybody list something that you didn’t know or remember?

In today’s reading, Jesus challenged the disciples to consider all the miracles that they had seen Him perform and decide who they thought He was based on what they had seen. The disciples had seen Jesus heal the blind, make the lame walk, feed over 5000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and two fish- He had done some amazing things in front of them! So, Jesus asked the question, “Who do you say that I am?”

Peter’s answer was, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God.” The disciples were beginning to truly recognize who Jesus was and what His mission on earth was. Jesus began to explain to the disciples that as the Messiah, God had a plan for him to suffer, be killed and be raised on the third day. The disciples did not truly understand all that Jesus was saying. Jesus was trying to prepare them for what was going to happen.

Application/Prayer:

If Jesus asked you this question, “Who do you say that I am?”, what would your answer be? How would you describe who Jesus is? Spend some time thinking about who Jesus is and what He means to you. Thank Him for who He is and all that He has done for you.

October Memory Verse:

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
