October 15 | Jesus Displays His Power

Today’s Reading:

Read Matthew 8:23-34; Matthew 9:13-38; Mark 4:35-5:43; Luke 8:22-56

It’s time to decide who the strongest person in your family is. Wondering how to do that? Pair up and challenge one another to an arm-wrestling match. Take turns so that everyone in your family has a chance to display their strength. Who was the strongest person in your family? Our reading today shows us how strong Jesus is as He displayed His power to many people He met in His ministry.

Large crowds were gathering around Jesus to learn from Him. His teachings were different than what they had heard before and the people wanted to learn more. More than that though, they also wanted to see what Jesus was doing. Jesus was demonstrating power that the people had never seen before.

Jesus performed miracles that got the people’s attention! The disciples were amazed at how the wind and waves obeyed Him as He stopped the storm. People possessed with demons were grateful when Jesus was able to heal them from the demon possession. They wanted to tell everyone about Jesus’ power. A man named Jairus knew that Jesus had the ability to heal with just His words and he asked Jesus to heal His daughter. The woman with the bleeding disorder knew that if she just touched Jesus she would be healed. The people could see that there was something special about Jesus. He had power that they had never seen before!

Application/Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer thanking Jesus for His power. Is there something you need him to help you with? Ask Him to display His power in your life

October Memory Verse:

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
