October 10 | The Sermon on the Mount

Today’s Reading:

Read Matthew 5-7

Before you read today, work together to make a list of all ten of the commandments that God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai. If you need a refresher, jump back to Exodus 20 and review what they were. As you read The Sermon on the Mount, listen for references that Jesus makes to the 10 Commandments God gave to Moses. Mark them off on your list as you hear them read.

Matthew was written for a Jewish audience.  As Matthew wrote, he wrote to specifically help the Jewish people see the connections between the prophecy about the coming Messiah and Jesus as the person who fulfilled the prophecy.

Our reading today in Matthew is referred to as ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ A sermon is a time of teaching or explaining something. And the word mount is a shortened way to say mountain. Jesus taught from a mountain and as you read, you will see that Jesus explained or interpreted the law and referred to many of the 10 Commandments. Do you remember where Moses was when God gave him the 10 Commandments? He was on Mt. Sinai. God gave Moses the law on a mountain and Jesus gave us the explanation of the law from a mountain. The connection between Moses and Jesus helped to point to Jesus as the Messiah that was promised in the Old Testament.

Application/Prayer:

Read Matthew 6:9-13. Jesus also gave the people an example of how they could pray. It is often called “The Lord’s Prayer.” Pray through these verses together as a family. Thank God for sending Jesus!

October Memory Verse:

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
