November 8 | Promises and Prophecies Fulfilled

Today’s Reading:

Read Acts 1-4; Psalm 110

Parents, to start off your time today, make a promise to your kids that you’re 100% confident you can keep! It can be as simple as extending bedtime by 10 minutes – it doesn’t have to be complicated. The goal is to demonstrate that you kept your promise. Spend some time as a family talking about what a promise is and how important it is to keep your word and do what you promise to do.

As Jesus was preparing His disciples for the fact that He was not going to be with them anymore in person, He promised that God was going to send a helper or a counselor who would be with them even if Jesus wasn’t with them in person. Read John 14:26.

In our reading today, Jesus was with the disciples for a short time after His resurrection. He helped them to see how his death and resurrection had fulfilled prophecies, and He reminded them that God was sending a helper to them. Jesus also challenged the disciples to tell others about Him. (Acts 1:8) After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples when to Jerusalem to wait. In Acts 2, we read how the Holy Spirit, the advocate, counselor and friend that Jesus promised, came! Jesus had fulfilled the prophecies, but He had also kept His promise.

This was the beginning of the church. The disciples began spreading the good news of how Jesus had come to fulfill the law and that He was the promised Messiah.

Application/Prayer:

Read Acts 4:20.

The Disciples said it was impossible for them to stop speaking about all that they had seen and heard. They understood that they needed to tell others about Jesus, who He was, and what He had done for them. Do you feel the same way about Jesus? Ask God to help you be bold in sharing your faith in Jesus with others! Don’t stop speaking about all you have seen and heard!

November Memory Verse:

“The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
