Today’s Reading:
Read I Corinthians 6:1-8, 12, 19-20; 8:4-13
Are you ready for a deep conversation as a family? Spend some time answering this question-
What is the purpose of your life?
Many philosophers and educators have tried to answer this question over the years. The reality is, Paul answered this question for us in his letter to the Corinthians.
The church at Corinth continued to struggle with understanding the teachings they were learning about living a life that honored Jesus. It was a challenged for them because the culture they were living in was completely opposite of the life that Paul was calling them to live- a life worthy of the calling of Christ. They were making many choices that were not right! Paul’s letter to the church helped them to understand how to determine what choices they should and should not make.
Paul explained to them that their bodies were actually the “temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you…” They had the Holy Spirit with them as believers and the Holy Spirit would help them to make the right decision. More than that, though, Paul reminds them, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.” That price was the death that Jesus experienced on the cross. His death made it possible for believers to be reconciled with God and so as believers, Paul wanted them to live as if they were living for God! Paul also reminded the church that as believers they should “glorify God with their body.” This was their purpose- to glorify God. If they thought about each choice they made by asking the question, “Does this glorify God?”- they would be able to live a life that honored God.
Application/Prayer:
The purpose of our life should be to live a life that glorifies God. In the same way that Paul reminded the Corinthians that they were bought for a price, we need to remember that same truth. Every choice we make should bring glory to God. Ask God to help you think about what brings glory to Him with each decision you make.
November Memory Verse:
“The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.”
- Bring your Bible! Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
- Each day starts with a reading prompt. Read the selection as a family. If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
- After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
- Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word! After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
- There is a reading for six days of the week. The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
