November 1 | Jesus Celebrated the Passover

Today’s Reading:

Read Matthew 26:1-5, 14-35; Mark 14:1-2,10-31; Luke 22:1-38; John 13

What is a tradition in your family that is important to you? In our family, one important tradition is that we always get together as a family on Christmas morning and read Luke 2 together before we open any presents. In our family, it just wouldn’t seem like Christmas morning if we didn’t do that.

The Israelites had important traditions or celebrations that they honored as well. Celebrating the Passover meal each year was a way that the Jewish people followed the law that Moses gave them while remembering all that God had done for their people when He rescued them from Egypt.

Jesus honored the celebration of the Passover with a special meal that he had with his disciples. Jesus knew this would be one of the last meals that He would have with His disciples. He used the celebration to prepare them for what was going to happen. Jesus knew that His time on earth was coming to an end soon. As a special way of showing His love for His disciples, Jesus washed their feet. Jesus showed that He was willing to be a servant to demonstrate His love. The disciples did not understand all that Jesus was teaching them.

Application/Prayer:

John 13:34 says, “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are to love one another.” Jesus taught the disciples to love others well. He served them to show them that He loved them. How can you show love to those around you today? Ask God to help you see the people around you who need to see HIs love today.

November Memory Verse:

“The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
