July 14 | Week 28 Gospel Conversation Opportunity

GOSPEL CONVERSATION OPPORTUNITY

Read Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9;6; Micah 5:2-5.

As Israel faced many challenges because of their continual disobedience, God remained faithful to communicate through the prophets about a coming Messiah who would be the savior they had been waiting for.

Isaiah 7:14 promised a Savior who would be named Immanuel- God with us.  Imagine the excitement for the Israelites as they imagined a Messiah who would make it possible for them to experience God among them!

Isaiah 9:6 promised that the government would be on His shoulders.  We have read about a lot of unrest with the government of the Northern and Southern kingdoms.  Having a Savior who would resuce them from that unrest and be their prince of peace would have provided the Israelites with peace.

Micah 5:12 promised a ruler from Bethlehem who would be their shepherd and their peace.  We’ve read about a lot of fighting and unrest this week.  Peace probably didn’t seem possible to the Israelites.  But, the prophets promised it was coming.

Now, consider how those verses impact YOU today?  What does it mean that God sent Jesus to be Immanuel?  How about knowing that Jesus is the Prince of Peace?  How can you see Jesus acting as a shepherd in your life?  Is he your peace?

Remember, God’s word is living and active! (Hebrews 4:12). Old Testament prophecy was not just meant for the Israelites.  It applies to our life as well.  Thank God for the truth that His word is the same yesterday, today and forever!

July Memory Verse:

“Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
