Faith, Addiction Recovery, and Learning to Keep Saying Yes to God | Steeple People Podcast

It’s possible to grow up knowing all about God and still not know Him. You can go to church every week and memorize the Lord’s Prayer, then walk away as an adult and lose yourself in the world. For many people, fear quietly runs everything. Alcohol and other substances numb the pain for a while. Eventually, the only prayer left is a desperate one. From the outside, everything can look fine while the inside is falling apart.

But desperation can be a gift. When someone finally says, “I’m done, and I need help,” that small crack of surrender is all God needs. Recovery doesn’t happen in one moment. It happens through a string of uncomfortable yeses: going to a meeting instead of opening a drink, calling a sponsor, starting every morning in a prayer chair with “Thank you, God. What are we doing today?” Philippians 2:13 reminds us that God gives us both the desire and the power to do what pleases Him, one day at a time.

Those yeses don’t stop at freedom. They lead to ministry: sitting with women in jail and in recovery units, watching the light return to their eyes, and, one Easter, walking back through the doors of a church. What began on one Easter as the darkest day became, two Easters later, a homecoming. If you’re struggling today, change is scary, but it’s worth it. Find a safe person, reach out, and be willing to try something different. It could save your life.
