December 21 | The Gift of God’s Power

Today’s Reading:

Read 2 Peter, Jude

So, have you finished your Christmas list yet? How many things are on the list? Do you limit the number of gifts that can be asked for in your home? Some families practice only giving 3 gifts – representing the three gifts the Wisemen brought to Jesus. Can you imagine if you got EVERYTHING on your list? What a special Christmas that would be!

2 Peter 1:3-4 says, “His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by his own glory and goodness. By these he has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world….” That verse is such a great reminder that God’s DIVINE power has given us EVERYTHING we need to live a life of godliness. God has called us to live a life that brings Him glory and He has promised us that He has given us everything we need to make that happen.

Jude 1:20 says, “But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.” Want to know how to keep yourselves in the love of God? Claim the divine power that God promises to give us in 2 Peter 1.

Application/Prayer:

Spend some time thanking God today for all the gifts He has given you! Not just for gifts you will open on Christmas morning- but for the gifts God gives you every day. He is faithful to give us what we need, when we need it. Thank Him for that today!

December Memory Verse:

I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
