December 20 | The Gift of Confidence in God

Today’s Reading:

Read 2 Timothy

Since it’s the season of making lists, brainstorm a list of all the things you believe God can do! Remember, He created the world, so there’s a lot He is capable of. You may need to set a timer so that this activity has a beginning and an end. Making this kind of list could take a long time because there’s so much we could list!

Knowing all that God has done and can do helps us to have confidence in all that He will do! Sometimes there may be things that we face that seem scary or we may be unsure of, but because of our confidence in God, we don’t have to be afraid. 2 Timothy1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love and sound judgment.” Aren’t you grateful for the good gifts He has given us with power, love and sound judgment?

Sometimes not knowing what tomorrow will hold can also be a little scary! 2 Timothy 1:12 says, “…But I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.” We don’t have to worry about tomorrow, because God is faithful to “guard” our tomorrows for us!

And, if you ever worry about how you can KNOW that God will do what He says He will do, you can trust His word! 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” God’s word will give us all we need to that we can be equipped or ready for every good work He has called us to.

Application/Prayer:

Thank God for the confidence you can have in Him because of His faithfulness. We don’t have to be afraid or worried about tomorrow because He has given us a spirit of power, love and sound judgment. And He has given us His word so that we are equipped for every good work. We can have confidence in a big God to do big things in our life! What a gift!

December Memory Verse:

I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
