Today’s Reading:
Read Hebrews 11
Grab a wrapped present and let’s talk about it today! Allow each person a chance to explore the present – without allowing them to open it! Take turns guessing what could be inside the present. Use some clues. Who is the present for? Who is the present from? Is the present heavy? What does it sound like when you shake it? Have fun predicting what could be in the present- but don’t open it! Knowing all that you know about the gift, do you have faith that your prediction is correct?
Hebrews 11 is a chapter in the Bible that many people call the “Hall of Faith.” The chapter starts out defining faith, “Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.” Faith is a tricky concept to understand because it involves believing in something we haven’t seen yet. An easy way to think about faith is to consider this: Faith is Finding Assurance In Tomorrow’s Hidden truths. But how can we do that?
Consider all the faithful men and women listed in Hebrews 11. From Abel to Abraham, the author of Hebrews points out how they made decisions and followed God, “By faith….” They trusted that what God had called them to do, He would provide for them to do. And guess what? All of the men and women that are listed in Hebrews 11 all had faith that the Promised Messiah would come, but none of them were alive when Jesus was born. They had faith that God would fulfill His promise, even though they did not see that promise fulfilled while they were alive.
Application/Prayer:
Is there something in your life that you are trusting God to do? Sometimes it is hard to trust that the answer will come when we have to wait a long time, isn’t it? Try this- think of ways that God has been faithful to provide for you or take care of you before. When you remember all that He has already done, it makes it easier to trust that He will continue to provide for you! Thank Him for that truth today and for the FAITH to trust him with your tomorrows!
December Memory Verse:
I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.
- Bring your Bible! Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
- Each day starts with a reading prompt. Read the selection as a family. If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
- After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
- Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word! After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
- There is a reading for six days of the week. The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
