Day 36 | Who are you discipling? 

Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:1-2  

Devotion

Have you ever received a family heirloom? Something precious and meaningful, passed down from someone who came before you, that you now treasure and hope to pass on to future generations? Heirlooms are a beautiful metaphor for discipleship. 

In 2 Timothy 2:1-2, Paul models discipleship in a way that echoes the responsibility and joy of receiving something invaluable. Just as an heirloom carries the legacy of love, our faith is a precious gift we are called to share. The gospel is even greater because we have no limits on how many people we can pass it on to! 

Yesterday, we prayed for those who helped shape us into the disciples we are today. Reflecting on these individuals can bring us joy as we remember their influence. But it’s even more uplifting to realize that God calls us to pass that same faith on to others. 

Paul recognized his role in Timothy’s spiritual journey, having mentored him by proclaiming the truths of Jesus. Now, Paul emphasized that Timothy’s responsibility is to share the same gospel and discipleship with others who will, in turn, teach others. 

This relationship creates a direct line of discipleship that traces back from Jesus to His original disciples and then from those disciples to the ones they mentored. If we continue this pattern through countless generations, it ultimately leads to us! 

Our task now is to disciple others and share the good news of Jesus with those around us! 

A Personal Prayer

  • Thank God for the precious gift of faith and the mentors who have shaped you as a disciple. Ask Him to help you embrace your calling to share the Gospel and nurture others in their faith with joy and commitment. Pray that you follow Jesus’ example by multiplying His love and truth in your life and sharing the Gospel freely with others.

With a commitment to sharing the gospel and making disciples, Eternal Rock Evangelical Church is a beacon of hope in Antioch, focusing on Christ-centered teaching, worship, and community outreach. 
    • Pray for Pastor Wael Sous and the church leadership that God would grant them wisdom, strength, and encouragement to guide the congregation. 
    • Pray for the spiritual growth of Eternal Rock’s members so they will grow deeply in their faith and live as committed disciples of Christ. 
    • Ask God to bless the church’s outreach efforts in Antioch so that they can impact the community and draw people to the gospel. 

Prayer for the Nations: IMB SCARA Team South Asia

  • In a South Asian city of over 21 million people—ten times the population of metro Nashville—a remarkable discipleship movement is underway through the IMB’s SCARA team (Slum Community and Redlight Area).  Our church supports a team of missionaries who are equipping local leaders to make disciples in some of the poorest and darkest areas of these cities, leading to the emergence of fourth-generation churches igniting the hope of Jesus. 
  • Pray that the global workers serving alongside local church planters may be strengthened and encouraged in their efforts. 
  • Ask God to cultivate a desire among believers in these churches to share the gospel with their communities and foster unity among the new churches to support their mission.
