Day 28 | Abiding sustains momentum

Scripture: John 15:5

Devotion

Perhaps the seven most staggering words Jesus ever spoke are, “Apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Really? Nothing? Are You saying I can’t drive my kids to school without You, Jesus? Can’t work in my office? Can’t have coffee with a friend?

No. What He is saying is that we cannot bear lasting, eternal, spiritual fruit apart from abiding in Him. If that’s true, and it is, then our goal is not to produce more fruit in our own strength but to remain connected to Jesus.

To abide in Him means to stay connected, to make your home in Him as He has made His home in you. It is a daily posture of dependence, aligning your words, will, and way with His.

When we live abiding in Christ, our Vine, ordinary moments take on eternal meaning. The car ride to school becomes a time to bless our children. The workplace becomes a place to show the love of Jesus. Coffee with a friend becomes an opportunity to encourage, disciple, and pray together.

If we are to experience gospel momentum as a church, it will not happen apart from Jesus.

Rest in Him. Remain in Him. Abide in Him.

A Personal Prayer

Father, forgive me for striving to bear fruit in my own strength. Incline my heart toward Yours, and teach me to rest in You, remain in You, and abide in You, every single day.
