Day 21 | God’s power fuels His church

Scripture: Ephesians 3:20–21

Devotion

Most of the time I’ve thought about this passage, my focus has been on the promise of God’s ability to exceed whatever I ask for in prayer. I’ve also been drawn to the phrase about His power working in us.

Today, though, I’m realizing that this verse doesn’t end with what God does for me, it ends with God receiving glory. The part I’m usually focused on is Paul’s description of God in this verse. That description is still good, true, and instructive. God can and does answer our prayers in ways beyond what we can imagine, and His power is at work in us. Those are great promises!

But the main point of the verse is Paul’s call for us to give God the glory He deserves through both the church and Christ Jesus forever. Just as Christ’s life and work glorify the Father, Christ’s church (us) is also called to bring the Father glory. We get to participate in the same task and purpose as Jesus!

How do we do this?

We glorify God by trusting His power to do more than we ask or think and by joining His ongoing work through the church for all generations.

A Personal Prayer

Father, help me shift my prayers from “What can You do for me?” to “How can I glorify You as part of Your church?” Jesus, thank You for inviting me into Your mission. Help me to follow Your example and bring You glory. Holy Spirit, work powerfully in our church so that every generation brings glory to Your name.
