Scripture: 1 Peter 4:1–6
Devotion
It can be easy to be swept up in whatever fad or style is popular in the world around us. Whether it’s a new clothing trend (the 90’s are back!) or a cultural expectation (“I have to own a house before a certain age”), following the world’s expectations can be exhausting and even spiritually unhealthy.
Peter addresses this in his letter to the early church: After we become Christians, we should no longer prioritize what the world prioritizes but should “live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will” (v.2). We’ve spent enough time doing what the world tells us to do, and verse five lays out what those things might be: unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, and idolatry, as well as other kinds of “wild living.”
Our goal in living a life centered on God’s will should not be to appear better than others. Peter makes it clear that these actions will be noticed by our neighbors and communities, leaving them “surprised” and holding them accountable to God for their way of living (v.5). Simply put, when we stand firm on God’s values over the world’s values, it strengthens our spiritual maturity and bears witness to those around us. In an age of social media, the 24/7 news cycle, and constant opinions, when we stand firm on tried-and-true biblical wisdom, it stands out. Let’s be known for standing out on God’s behalf, knowing that no passing fad can offer the true joy found in God’s wisdom and Word.
A Personal Prayer
It’s been said that you can tell what someone values by looking at their calendar and bank statement. Take a moment to reflect on those two things; what are you spending time on that isn’t fully aligned with God’s will? What are you spending money on that allows the world to influence your life? Take a few minutes to give these things over to God. Pray through them. Maybe cancel that subscription you don’t need. Ask for wisdom to live within God’s will instead.
