Comfort or Calling? Building a Family That Lives on Mission

Most parents want the same things for their families: health, closeness, joy, and security. Those are good gifts from God. But somewhere along the way, it’s easy to start building a family around comfort and a beautiful family experience instead of asking how God wants to use that family for His kingdom. On this episode of Purposeful Family, Linc and Elizabeth ask the question underneath the question: what happens when comfort becomes the goal instead of the byproduct?

The conversation turns to the Great Commission — not as a task for the church alone, but as an invitation for the whole family. Linc and Elizabeth talk honestly about the barriers that keep so many of us from stepping into that invitation: feeling inadequate, believing missions is for “other families,” assuming it’s someone else’s job, or simply running out of time in an already full week. They point back to Deuteronomy 6 — getting God’s words into our own hearts first — and to the idea that families aren’t meant to adjust Jesus into their lives, but to adjust their lives into what He’s already calling them to.

From there, the episode gets practical. Small steps like praying for neighbors, writing down needs as a family, being generous, and serving locally can open the door to something bigger, including family mission trips. Elizabeth shares how her family’s yearly trip to Montana has shaped her kids’ faith and identity in ways a typical vacation never could. It’s an honest, encouraging conversation for any family wondering what it looks like to trade comfort for calling, one small step at a time.
