Today’s Reading:
Read Jeremiah 5:1-6; 14-31; Jeremiah 6; Jeremiah 7:1-11, 20-26; Jeremiah 8
Do this! Hide 10 Lego bricks, dolls, or another toy around the house. Make some of them easy to find, and others impossible. Have you ever spent time looking for something that was hard to find? Maybe you lost a toy that you searched high and low for and just couldn’t find. Isn’t that frustrating? Jeremiah was on a search as well. He was looking for just ONE person whom the Lord would consider righteous. Jeremiah’s hope was that if he could find just one person who was righteous, God would spare the people from the judgment that was coming.
Sadly, Jeremiah could not find one righteous person. Rather, the Israelites continued to demonstrate unrighteousness by saying one thing and doing another. Jeremiah had to tell the Israelites that God was sending an enemy nation from the north that would capture them. That nation was Babylon.
The Israelites continued in a cycle of disobedience. They did not show trust in God. They worshiped false gods instead. Jeremiah called the Israelites out and even told them they were walking backwards away from God’s plan and not forwards toward God’s plan. Jeremiah warned the Israelites that soon they would be taken captive.
Application/Prayer:
As a family, talk about what you think it means to walk forwards towards God’s plan. What are some things you can do to walk towards what God wants you to do? Act this out! For each thing you list that will help you walk towards God, stand up and take a step forward! Ask God to help you stay focused on His plan for your life.
August Memory Verse:
“Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
- Bring your Bible! Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
- Each day starts with a reading prompt. Read the selection as a family. If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
- After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
- Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word! After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
- There is a reading for six days of the week. The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
