August 31 | Choosing the Right Voice to Listen To

Today’s Reading:

Read Ezekiel 13; Ezekiel 14:1-11

Let’s play a game. Choose someone to be the listener; choose someone else to be the direction giver; choose someone else (or several someones!) to be the distractor. The direction giver is going to give the listener step by step instructions to follow. The distractors(s) are going to purposefully give opposite directions, The listener must achieve the goal of the direction giver.

Sometimes in life we have different voices telling us what to do, don’t we? When that happens, it might be hard to focus on the one voice we need to hear the most! God’s instructions for the Israelites were very clear. God had chosen prophets to deliver that message. However, there were people who were claiming to be prophets who were not telling the Israelites what God wanted them to hear. These false prophets were leading the Israelites away. Ezekiel’s message to those false prophets was that God was not going to allow them to continue to lead his people away. God was going to punish them for spreading the wrong message to the people.

Application/Prayer:

Read Isaiah 30:21. Ask God to help you always listen for HIS VOICE so you know which way you should go. Ask God to help you not to be distracted by the other voices that might be encouraging you to do things that would not honor God.

August Memory Verse:

“Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

Using the daily reading prompts from George H. Guthrie’s Read the Bible for Life, here’s how to use this devotional:
  1. Bring your Bible!  Your kids need to see that everything you are reading to them or learning about comes from an actual Bible!
  2. Each day starts with a reading prompt.  Read the selection as a family.  If your kids are readers, encourage them to read along with you.
  3. After you’ve read the passage, read the short devotional thought that goes along with each passage.
  4. Prayer and application are important any time we read God’s word!  After each devotional, there is a challenge to help apply what your family has read that day.
  5. There is a reading for six days of the week.  The last reading of the week is a Gospel Conversation Prompt to help you connect the reading from the week with God’s plan for salvation.
