You are Chosen

10 The Lord frustrates the counsel of the nations; he thwarts the plans of the peoples. 11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart from generation to generation. 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord—the people he has chosen to be his own possession!

Psalm 33:10-12

Written by Ben Hendren from the West Franklin Campus

Do you remember selecting teams for games when you were a kid? Everyone lined up, two captains were chosen, and then they took turns choosing their teams. I always wanted to be the first one chosen. Or maybe you recall being in middle school and someone asked you to a school dance. As awkward as boys and girls can be together at that age, it felt nice to be chosen. Perhaps during your career, you interviewed for a job along with multiple candidates, and you were chosen for the job. Being chosen gives us comfort, joy and excitement. It feels great to be chosen.

The scripture today comes from Psalm 33, which is titled “Praise to the Creator.” The dictionary defines praise as “expressing warm approval or admiration.” I don’t know of a better word than praise to describe my gratitude toward our God who created us. He is truly worthy of our praise, our admiration, and our lives. Our Creator chose us to be part of His grand plan.

Our focus today is on verses 10 through 12. Verse 10 gives us a reminder of God’s power over man. Despite plans of ungodly men to slow the spread of the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ, God overcame the efforts of the wicked. He rendered their efforts to contain Him useless. God chose His men and women to take the gospel to all people and all nations.

Our plans are futile if they are not aligned with the Lord. Verse 11 points to His steadfastness and His eternal existence. God has always been and will always be. He designs a plan and executes it. He created the earth and all that is in it, and He sent us Jesus, who will return for us. God transcends all human measures of time, and He has promised generations of believers that we will be with Him for eternity. While no one knows the exact date, we can rely on His promise.

Verse 12 provides a wonderful description of God choosing us. We are blessed, meaning we are happy, or our condition is desirable, because we are chosen by God. The sovereign Lord of all chose us, and we will enjoy His inheritance. Despite the challenges of life on earth today, we must remember that we are chosen by God and that He takes care of His chosen people.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Do you celebrate the fact that you are chosen by God?
  2. Do you know a believer who needs a gentle reminder that God chose them?
  3. Is there a nonbeliever in your life you can pray for, who needs to know they were chosen long before they were born?

Family Activity
Psalm 33:12 “Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord…”

Draw and color a picture of the United States on a sheet of paper. Around the drawing draw or write things that honor, glorify, or make God happy. After sharing pray as a family that we as a nation will do those things.

Missions Prayer
Pray for a metal worker in South Asia who surrendered his life to Christ and began making images of Bible stories rather than images of idols. Pray for new churches meeting in homes in South Asia.
