Wrong Question!

11 For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

Written by Tony H. Nunn from the Brentwood Campus

For years I was asking God the wrong question: “What do You want me to do with my life?” Sometimes we can’t see the trees for the forest! That was me!

The Bible study Experiencing God, by Henry Blackaby and Claude King, educated me about the right question. “God is at work all around me (the trees). What is He doing, and how can I join Him?” It was such a relief for me to know that I no longer had to constantly ask and wait for God to reveal His plan for my life. I was already in the “forest” of His works and just needed to join Him.

This is not an ad for Experiencing God, but I do recommend reading the book if the Bible study is not available at church. I know many people who told me it changed their life for the better!

If you are asking the “wrong question” as a Christian, stuck in a state of inactivity and not seeing a purpose for your life, then start looking and praying about seeing the (trees) works God is doing all around you. It’s always there. God is always at work!

When God shows you a work He is doing, the right question is, “How can I join Him?” God does have a plan for our lives, and it is included in all He is already doing. Here are some examples God’s works that we can all see and pray about and explore right now!

  • His work going on inside the church, like being a deacon, Nurture Team member, homeless program volunteer, greeter on Sunday morning, choir member, Special Needs worker, Life Group leader, Vacation Bible School volunteer, etc. The opportunities are endless!
  • His work going on outside the church, like the Brentwood Baptist Medical/Dental Unit, Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home, GraceWorks, Sweet Sleep, Reboot Recovery, Men of Valor, joint effort with Mount Zion Baptist Church, Barefoot Republic summer camp, etc.

God’s forest of works is vast, and the trees are all around us. Be a “tree hugger” and find the work(s) God has planned for you. When God reveals it to you, it will be so much easier to say YES and join Him! Just take that first step of praying and exploring, and God’s plan for your life will open up!

Personally, I was overwhelmed at how much joy and purpose came into my life. My eyes were open to God’s work, and all I had to do was join Him in it.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Look on the church’s web site to see all the mission programs going on right now. https://brentwoodbaptist.com/missions/
  2. After you discover all the ministries going on around you, pick two or three that appeal to you. Start praying and looking into them to see where it leads you. You may start in a very simple way, and God will bless you by revealing even greater ways to serve Him!
