When Darkness Seems to Hide His Face

“Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them.”

Alone in The Dark

Have you ever felt surrounded by utter darkness? Maybe your current season has left you stuck, and fear has told you, “You’re never going to get out.” Rest assured…you’re not alone in your longing to see the light of day again. So, what do we do when darkness seems to hide God’s face?

Throughout Scripture, the imagery of roaring seas often represents vast darkness. Noah, Jonah, and Paul are a few examples of people who have, like us, faced stormy waters. Yet the sovereign hand of God preserved each one’s life. And the same is to be said for His disciples, too.

You’re Never Alone

It’s easy to believe the lie that Christ is absent amid seasons of darkness. But as the great theologian says, “We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God. He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thoughts.”

It takes courage to believe the truth of Emmanuel. His Spirit always goes before and dwells in the places where the future seems most bleak. He alone hovers over the raging waters as Lord of the storm. Jesus meets us in the middle of depths unknown…not only to save us, but rather, to be with us.

In Christ Alone

So, what can be done when Christ’s presence seems just out of reach?

As the lyricist penned, “When darkness seems to hide His face, I rest on His unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.”

Now What?

What are the circumstances in your life that have left you in the dark? Take some time to talk to the Lord about your feelings now. Are you experiencing loss, fear, or loneliness? Ask God to meet you right where you are, to reveal His comforting presence. Then, tell someone how you are trusting God with your life today.
