What We Say Matters

August 12, 2022

“These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

No Take-Backs

Did you ever use the phrase “no takesies backsies” as a kid? It’s this idea that whatever has been stated is now set in stone. Maybe it was in reference to a trade between friends or siblings. Or maybe you lost a game of jinx. Either way, there were no take-backs.

In the same way, God’s Word cannot be revoked; it is set in stone. His commandments are ours to really listen and respond to. And the ways we teach them to those in our circle of influence matters. Because what we say matters…more than we even realize.

Truth Instilled Within

When God spoke the world into being, His words went into action and are still active today. It’s our job to instill His truths into our children, friends, coworkers, and neighbors as we journey through this life. Moses instructed God’s people as such: “These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.”

But how do we allow such truths to really sink into our hearts? We need constant reminding ourselves, so it’s no doubt that those who are learning them likewise need these reminders. For this reason, the prophet instructed them further: “Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

In Communicating His Love

We’ve talked about this “24/7 discipleship” model before, and this was really God’s plan along! That we would make the things of the Lord become so natural to our normal rhythms that they’re discussed throughout our everyday tasks.

The ways we communicate God’s love will become the reality to those who are learning and walking alongside us. What we say matters in all things, but especially as it pertains to who we are as the Creator’s creation. We’re helping others understand their own identity as God’s beloved children. So, if there are “no takesies backsies” in what God’s Word says, how can you communicate it effectively with those whom He longs to be in relationship with? May it be as true in our words as it is in our thoughts, hearts, and actions.

Now What?

In an honest survey of your life today, do you believe that God’s truths are really and truly instilled within your heart? Or do you feel as though you can take greater steps in learning, maybe through signing up for a class or a group? Ask the Lord to help you ingrain His Word into your natural daily rhythms, so that you can incorporate it into your thoughts, words, and actions.
