But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
The Kindled Spark of Hope
We’ve all been there. We pinned our hopes and dreams on one thing—one event, one person—and now that one thing is gone. It seems as if the darkness will never leave. Were our hopes too high? What do we do now?
Ever since the angel told Mary she was going to have a miracle baby boy, hopes have been high. When the kings saw the star and followed it to meet the Savior, their hopes built throughout their journey. As preteen Jesus explained the Scriptures as no one else could, an unexpected spark of hope was kindled.
To Wonder in The Dark
Throughout His three years of ministry, everywhere Jesus went—healing bodies, minds, and souls—the hope escalated. The disciples, who were in His midst constantly, wondered during a scary boat ride, “Who is this man, that even the winds and waves obey Him?”
Hope spread throughout the land. You could almost hear the people’s thoughts. “Jesus can do anything! Jesus will do everything! He’s our hero!”
And then, before they even understood what was happening—He was gone. Murdered. Crucified.
Now What, Lord?
Do you hear the whisperings? If He didn’t save himself, how could He save us? Darkness and grief filled their hearts. All hope was dashed.
Were their hopes too high?
Your dream job is gone. The perfect marriage is over. Or it never began. Your darling baby is nowhere to be found. Your heart is clouded, your happiness gone. Where is your hero?
Were your hopes too high?
But wait! Somewhere in the heart, deep down, a small spark of hope still burns.
The Spark Still Kindles
On this day, Cleopas and another were walking and talking of the recent days, when a stranger came up beside them and asked about their conversation. Surprised that he had not heard, they quickly informed this stranger of the reasons their hopes were gone.
But as they told of the missing body and the fact that this was the third day, was that a small spark of hope? Did their minds remind them how Jesus talked about the third day’s importance? That He would return?
A Roaring Fire
Is your mind reminding your heart of the promises God has given us? Do you hear the whispers of Joshua 1:9? Isaiah 41:10? Romans 8:28?
Jesus has His own timetable. He does not live by this world’s rules or deadlines. But He IS there waiting for you. He has the kindling to build your spark back to a roaring fire!
Just as these men finally realized who was in their midst, you will find that He is in your midst as well. Draw near to Him. Spend time in His Word. Each moment you spend with Him adds another log to the fire in your heart.
Allow Him to remind you that your hopes are set, not too high, but TOO LOW!
If your fire is burning brightly at this season of life, reach out to someone else who needs the reminder of Jesus’ love. Be the light! Matthew 5:14.
