Waiting Patiently for Redemption

May 18, 2021

5 So Ruth said to her, “I will do everything you say.” 6 She went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had charged her to do. 7 After Boaz ate, drank, and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the end of the pile of barley, and she came secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. 8 At midnight, Boaz was startled, turned over, and there lying at his feet was a woman! 9 So he asked, “Who are you?” “I am Ruth, your servant,” she replied. “Take me under your wing, for you are a family redeemer.”

Ruth 3:5-9

Written by Timothy Miller from the Brentwood Campus

When was the last time someone asked you to do something that would impact your family for generations? You would most likely answer, “Never.” However, the story of Ruth, set in the dark days of the judges, reveals this kind of impact. It contains the incredible message of God’s providence, His faithful love, and His commitment to His people.

The Hebrew phrase translated as ″spread the corner of your garment over me″ in the NIV, or ″take me under your wing″ in the CSV, is an idiomatic way of making a marriage proposal.

When speaking of His relationship with Israel, God pledged His commitment to His people using the same language in Ezekiel 16:8. ″I spread the corner of my garment over you…I entered into a covenant with you…and you became mine.” It established a marriage covenant that entailed protecting and providing for the wife.

Questions to Ask Yourself

No one knows when the Master will be returning, or when we will be called to join Him. Here are some things that you can do to make sure you are prepared.

  1. Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior? If not, do you realize your sinfulness and that Jesus alone provides the forgiveness you need? If this is where you are, pray something like this: Dear Lord Jesus, I believe you died on the cross for my sin. Please forgive me. Come into my life. I receive You as my Lord and Savior.
Right now, please let someone at the church know what you have done.
  2. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ already, are you keeping His commands? Are you seeking out and making disciples?
  3. How are you preparing yourself, your spouse, your family, and all those you influence for the return of the Savior of the world?

Missions Prayer
Pray for the economy of the country, the income of the people, and relief from the pandemic for the people of South Asia. Pray that the hardships of the last year will open hearts to hear and respond to the gospel.
