This Is Old News for You

“Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old command that you have had from the beginning. The old command is the word you have heard.”

1 John 2:7

Have you heard?

“It all seems to go in one ear and out the other…” You may have heard this phrase when you were a teenager. Or maybe you said it to your own kids (or even a spouse). It’s usually said when someone repeats themselves because the listener didn’t hear the first time or forgot what was said.

Are we listening?

The truth is that, at one point or another, we’ve all missed what people have said to us. Likewise, we’ve been frustrated at others for not listening to what we’ve said. And the same is true in our spiritual lives. God has been speaking since the beginning of creation. And He hasn’t stopped. The question is…are we listening?

He is speaking!

The bad news is that none of us are perfect. The Bible accounts numerous times when humans didn’t pay attention or ignored truth entirely. Our flawed hearing began in the garden. That’s when we failed to heed God’s warning and yielded to the word of a snake. But the good news is that God hasn’t given up on us! The truth of His Word endures forever.

Maybe you’re in a season where it’s hard to hear God’s voice, and you find it difficult to distinguish from others. No matter where you are in life, meet God in His Word. You never know…you might find that He’s been speaking to you there all along.

What Now?

Make a habit of reading God’s Word every day. Remember, it’s okay to start small. Write impactful takeaways from your Bible reading. You never know when you might have to remind yourself one day. Ask someone to join you in reading God’s Word together and share what God is saying to you.
