For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
What About Love?
Have you noticed how the world today clamors for diversity, inclusion, and equity, with no reference to love? The world does not recognize God’s way of achieving all three objectives through love. Yet in Christ, we can truly come to know the way we are loved by the Father.
God the Father has expressed His limitless love to all humanity by sending us His Son—Jesus Christ—in human form and by giving us His church.
Through Christ and His Church
Jesus established His church, with Himself as its head, to continue after His ascension, in order to show the Father’s love and to demonstrate true diversity, inclusion, and equity through that love. Everyone who believes in Jesus Christ and who follows Him by faith becomes a member of His universal church, the body of Christ, a body as diverse as the parts of the human body (1 Corinthians 12:12-31). True diversity is possible only in the church whose head is Christ.
John 3:16 expresses true inclusion. As Jesus explained to Nicodemus, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” “Everyone” is an all-inclusive word. Paul summarized God’s idea of inclusion when he wrote, “In Christ there is not Greek and Jew… barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all” (Colossians 3:11). In Galatians 3:28 he includes “male and female” in a similar statement.
The Problem of Sin Solved Forever
John 3:16-17 also demonstrates true equity. God’s offer of eternal life settles forever the problem of sin, the scourge of humanity that separates God from His human creatures and causes physical and spiritual death. Belief in Jesus Christ assures His followers that they will never experience eternal separation from God or from His love. Jesus has established true equity for all who place their faith and trust in Him.
God could have chosen another way to show us His love, but this is the way we are loved: He chose Jesus—and His church. The Father’s generosity and wisdom in giving His Son to save us, together with His priceless gifts of salvation and eternal life, show His deep and eternal love for us.
How He loves us! How He desires us to share His love with others as members of His body, the church!
Pause and reflect on this great gift of love and eternal life. Thank Him for the love we have found in Jesus, that we are able to willingly and joyfully this gift! Consider those whom you know need to hear about the life you have find in Christ. Pray for opportunities to share, that they would hear the Word of life.
