No Changes Here

August 18, 2022

“Know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands.”

Deuteronomy 7:9

Fraught, Yet Unfrightened

How different does your world look today than it did yesterday? Or a day ago? Month ago? A year? No doubt, we’ve all experienced huge changes over the course of the last two years. Maybe it’s within our jobs, household, or family dynamics. Perhaps this is also true in regards to our friendships and other relationships. For many of us, this phenomena of change and adjustment leads us to wonder: who are we? Where does our purpose lie? What are we supposed to hold onto when it seems like everything is slipping out of our hands?

Our world is fraught with change, it seems. Yet we can still remain steadfast and fixed on the object of our hope. When it comes to the God of the universe, we can look toward His Word and still proclaim, “No changes here!” In His faithfulness, we find our steadfastness.

For a Thousand Generations

In our studies of Deuteronomy, we’ve been reading God’s words given through Moses to the people as they prepared to enter the promised land. One key idea he continues to circle back to is that of God’s immutable nature: His consistent and unchangeable state of being. He encourages the Israelites to hear and to remember this truth, “Know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands.”

When we say that His faithfulness abounds for a thousand generations, we’re not talking about a literal thousand branches on a family tree soon to expire. Rather, we’re talking about His consistency that endures through the ages—unending, eternal, and lasting forever and for all time. The good news about this news is that when we say “forever,” we really mean it. There are truly no changes here; no, not a single one.

Steadfast in Our Influence

The unwavering faithfulness and loyalty of our God was true for the Israelites, is true for us, and is true still for the next generation of followers to come. This means that the Lord’s gracious, loving, and kind nature is still extended toward any who come to believe in His name. Here’s where we come in: to influence with intentionality with His steadfastness as our guide.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be disciples who make disciples. It’s our privilege, joy, and honor to be a part of a generation who proclaims His goodness and helps grow the new branches of God’s family tree. How can you get connected so others find their place within His family? God never changes and neither does our mission of making disciples. What does your influence look like today as you seek to impact the believers of tomorrow, both in your home and outside of it?

Now What?

Take a moment to reflect on what God’s unchanging nature means for you, personally. How is His love a safe place for you to land? How does this impact your mission of living on mission for Him? Consider how you have been positioned in a place of influence for others to come to the saving knowledge of who He is.
