I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me

Philippians 4:13

Written by Susan Foster from the Harpeth Heights Campus

Have you ever found yourself wanting to share the gospel with a coworker, friend, or family member, but not sharing because you are afraid? It is natural in circumstances where we feel uncomfortable to often give in to our fear. However, we can be at ease to share the gospel by Christ be the source of our strength. Sharing the gospel isn’t about what gifts we have, but rather that we know the Giver.

In Philippians 4:13, Paul shares with us, “I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.” What is Paul really saying here?  Is he telling us to believe in ourselves because we can be strong? Is he saying that Christ can empower us to do whatever we want? No, this scripture is one of the most well-known scriptures and yet is often taken out of context. We must read Philippians 4:11-12 to help us understand Paul’s meaning.

Paul tells us he has learned to be content in all circumstances.  He recounts some of the different circumstances he’s found himself in, from being hungry to well fed, having needs to having an abundance, in all these circumstances he has learned to be content no matter where he finds himself.  These preceding verses show us how Paul knows what He is talking about because he has been tested and faced challenges. Paul, out of his firsthand experiences, is saying no matter what your circumstances are, you can be content if you get your strength from God.  Does that include being at peace even in moments of sharing the gospel with others?

Instead of looking at our shortcomings or dismissing sharing the gospel as a gift we do not have, we must focus on the Giver who gives all we need to carry out the great commission. Our contentment needs to rest in the confidence that Jesus is with us and He himself is our source of peace and contentment. His strength makes it possible for us to do all the things He has planned for us.  He can be our source of strength to share His story, His love, and His peace with those around us.  Who in your life needs you to lean into His strength and share the gospel with them?
