Leaving A Legacy

December 30, 2020

51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.

Luke 2:51-52

Slow motion photography is amazing to watch. Especially with nature. For example, seeing a flower go from a bud to a beautiful flower is a breathtaking unfolding.

Jesus’ life was that way. Christ as Divine, must have had all knowledge and power from the first. But He subjected Himself to the laws of human development. He consented to an unfolding which should exhibit a perfect childhood, a perfect youth, a perfect man. He was an obedient child, humble, and made God proud.

Do you remember in the 90’s everyone wanted to be “Just like Mike”? Michael Jordan became a basketball hero who turned the game into one of the most watched sports. He was labeled as being able to “defy gravity”.

Does anyone ever say they want to be Just like Jesus? Let’s look at what that would be like:

  1. He increased mentally — don’t stop learning.
  2. He increased physically — take care of yourself.
  3. He increased spiritually — spend time with the Father (God) Morning, night, in times of need.
  4. He increased emotionally — built solid friendships, strong family relationships, disciplined others.

Today is the day to begin a spiritual legacy with those around you.

(Loosely based on Jerry McKee, September 8, 2008, Just Like Jesus)

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Do you understand God’s Goal is for a life is to become like Jesus?
  2. How do you inspire the next generation?

Family Activity
Use a tape measure to measure everyone’s height. Comment who is the tallest and who is the shortest. Talk with your children about how, over time, they will grow physically to be as tall (or maybe taller) than you! Point out verse 52 of today’s passage and talk about how Jesus increased/grew and what that implied. Just like the devotional writer commented, Jesus increased mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally, all in ways that glorified His Father, God. We can grow in those ways too! Ask your family to make a list of how they would like to grow in these ways in the new year. Post the list on the refrigerator over the coming month as a reminder and challenge to grow in their walk with God.

Missions Prayer
Pray for Chris and Jenny, global workers in our church family planting a deaf church in Murfreesboro. Pray for more contacts with deaf in the area and wisdom as they lead this group of believers to reach their community with the gospel.
