Forget Status!

March 12, 2021

46 An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them. 47 But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand next to him. 48 He told them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me. For whoever is least among you—this one is great.”

Luke 9:46-48

Have you ever gotten caught up in the pursuit of your status in this world? Perhaps it was on a sports team or in a club when you were younger, or perhaps more recently in your job, volunteer organization or at church. Middle Tennessee is full of big beautiful houses, music superstars and rich executives. It is easy to see how we can get caught up in the pursuit of status.

The disciples had begun arguing about who was the greatest among them. They wanted to establish which of them would be the right-hand man of Jesus and achieve the highest status in the group. To have Jesus call out a child, who had no social status in those days, and stand the child at His right hand must have been humbling for the disciples.

Jesus turned the fight for status upside-down when He said, “Whoever is least among you—this one is great.” He Himself exemplified humility and service through both His teachings and His actions. He humbled himself first by becoming a man. He later served his disciples by washing their feet. He then demonstrated the ultimate humility when He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross.

Jesus is neither worried about nor impressed by your “status” in this world. Status will not secure your salvation—but it can certainly hinder it. Jesus told the disciples, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me.” Jesus made it clear that status is irrelevant and that the lowly will not be forgotten or left out. Everyone should be welcomed and received.

Regardless of your status in this world, take comfort that your salvation is not dependent on it.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. What are some ways you can increase humility in your life?
  2. Can you incorporate service of others into your daily routines?
  3. How can you encourage those around you who might be caught up in the status cycle?

Missions Prayer
Pray for creativity in strategy as our church considers opportunities to send mission journey teams, summer/semester/year-long missionaries, and career missionaries. Pray for wisdom regarding where to send, how to connect and serve, and how to support.
