“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” —Romans 15:13
You’re over halfway to meeting your baby face-to-face, and it’s amazing how the inner working of your baby’s body is already at work. This is week 21 and the small intestine has begun movement. The digestive system is far enough along that the baby can already start to swallow amniotic fluid.
With my high school and college biology classes long behind me, I needed a little refresher about what that really meant. What exactly does the small intestine do? In my research, I was reminded that the main function of the long and twisty organ is to absorb nutrients and minerals from food. Outside of this, it is a hollow tube that connects the stomach to the large intestines.
I can’t help but be reminded of all the things that pass through my daily life: conversations, stresses, media, work environments, etc. So, if all these things consistently pass through, then what is filling me? Are these conversations and spaces full of rich, spiritual, life-giving nutrients and minerals to be absorbed? How are we filling out hearts, lives, and souls?
I have been told more than once that there is a difference between mere meditation and sitting in silent stillness with the Lord. One mindset is about emptying out yourself. In theory, that can sound appealing but the reality is that’s not life-giving at all. Sitting with the Lord is about filling yourself up with His Word, His Voice, and His Truth. Those are spiritual nutrients that your body, heart, and soul are craving to absorb.
As your little one continues to grow, there will be many items and voices vying for your attention, but remember to let the things that fill your heart and soul, the truths that you cling to, be things that come from the Lord.
Take some time now and pray for your little one. Pray for the small intestine as it has begun to have movement. Pray for the fetal digestive system as it has developed enough to allow the fetus to swallow amniotic fluid. Ask the Lord to fill your life and your baby’s life with only His goodness and grace.
