9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
Do you remember when you first obtained your driver’s license or passport? You were given these documents to validate your right to sit behind the wheel of a car or to leave the country in which you were born and raised. You didn’t have to question whether you had truly been given these freedoms. You had evidence right in the palm of your hand, and no one could take that away from you.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the evidence of belonging to Christ were that tangible? Even though we can’t obtain a certificate or card stating that we truly do belong to Christ, we can come to the conclusion that we do belong to Him through the evidence of the Holy Spirit living inside of us. Although we can’t touch or hold the Holy Spirit in our hands, we can feel Him tugging at our hearts or stirring our thoughts all day long. When we accept Christ and make the conscious decision to follow Him, we receive the Holy Spirit, and there’s nothing we or anyone else can do to take that away from us.
How can you know the Holy Spirit is living inside you? Think back to a time when a difficult decision had to be made. You wrestled with various scenarios in your head and talked it out with trusted friends and mentors. However, if you were being honest with yourself, you knew what the right decision was the whole time. You just knew it was going to be incredibly difficult, and you also knew the result would not make it seem to be the right decision in the eyes of the world.
Even though you felt torn at the time, you were relieved knowing you made the right decision. You acted according to the Holy Spirit and not according to the flesh. If you didn’t belong to Christ, you would not have worried yourself so much about trying to make the right decision. But you chose to follow the harder path, and God’s Spirit also gave you the courage to walk that path regardless of the consequences it might bring.
