1 Peter 5:6-7
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you. — 1 Peter 5:6-7
Keep On Casting

When I was twelve, I went fishing with my papa on the South Haven Pier in Michigan, which was close to his home. My papa was a great fisherman, and I was eager to learn from him. Fishing from the pier was different than any fishing I had done before, so it should come as no surprise that my first cast ended up hooking the pier itself. On the second cast, I hooked some rocks right below the pier. The third cast, I hooked one of the columns holding up the pier. Needless to say, I was not an expert caster, and it took multiple attempts before I got the hook in the water. What I learned that day was that casting off of the pier wasn’t very easy for me—but I could do it if I kept trying.
Casting our anxieties on God is very similar. For some of us, we read 1 Peter 5:7, and we think, “I really want to give God all my anxieties and trust the promise that He cares for me.” However, when we try, we end up taking those anxieties right back and start worrying again. Have you ever found yourself simply not able to let go of something and give it fully to God? You are not alone! Just as it took me multiple times to learn how to cast the fishing line off the pier into the water, trusting God and casting all of our anxieties on Him can take more than one attempt. In fact, for most of us it can be a daily thing to recognize that we are walking with anxiety—and then give it to God.
As believers, we can walk with confidence, knowing God cares for us and knowing He has the power and wisdom to put that care to work in the most glorious way. He wants what is best for us, and He also wants His love and glory to be known by others through us. This means that no matter what our circumstances are, we can and should cast all our cares on Him. We must humbly recognize that we don’t have to worry, or be consumed with the details, or find the solution on our own. We just have to keep on casting till we make sure we have given all our worries and anxieties to Jesus. When we do, that frees us to spend our days focused on Him and the ways we see Him caring for us.
So if you find your mind and heart consumed with worries and anxieties, keep on casting! Jesus is waiting to catch them all.
- Read Philippians 4:8. Evaluate your thoughts and consider where you are focusing them. Commit to giving all your anxieties to Jesus.
- Do you see how God is caring for you? Look today for specific ways He is providing and caring for you. Make a list, and then give thanks for how He cares for you.
- When you catch yourself worrying today, stop and pray. Give God all your worries, and then each time you try to take them back, stop and pray. Keep casting those worries until He has them all.
