4 because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. — 1 John 5:4

Does Santa Believe?

by Phil Byerly

The other day I was listening to a comedy station on my commute home. As the comedian was rattling off random thoughts, he quipped, “I wonder what Jesus does for Santa Claus on His birthday?” I laughed out loud. It was such a silly question! But after reading this scripture, it crossed my mind again, because I know this devotion will be read when both Jesus and Santa Claus are on the top of people’s minds.

Ironically, the season of celebrating of the birth of Jesus is also the season when the pressures of our Santa-Claus world drive people to the highest levels of stress and depression. The Message rendering of 1 John 5:4 says, “The conquering power that brings the world to its knees is our faith. The person who wins out over the world’s ways is simply the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God.”

Eternal victory, peace, love and joy are what Jesus gives His obedient followers. The comedian’s question was rhetorical and meant to make us laugh, but if he really wanted an answer, the answer depends on whether Santa believes Jesus is the Son of God. If Santa has put his trust in Jesus, then Jesus gives him the blessed assurance of eternal life, peace, love and joy.

We have in sign in our house that says, “When life becomes more than you can stand, kneel.” We need to kneel proactively and obediently every day during the Christmas season, focusing on the birth of Jesus, the Son of God. If we seek Him first, Christmas will truly be a joyful and peaceful time in the middle of the crazy ways of the world.

“Joy to the world—the Lord has come!”

Praxis

  1. Are you currently experiencing the peace of Jesus Christ or the stress of the world? Kneel and give thanks to God and put your trust in Him.
  2. Is your family Christ-centered during Christmas? A family Advent wreath can help you to focus on Him.
  3. How do you think others perceive the maturity of your faith by your actions during Christmas?
