Revelation 21:3-4

4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. — Revelation 21:3-4

Last Moments

by Brad Smith

In the early part of this year, my family went through one of the hardest moments in our lives. I was in the room and witnessed my father-in-law take his last breath. I cannot put into words what I and everyone in the room were feeling. Over the prior 12 months, we had seen him go through so much—from having heart surgery to dealing with emotional and mental illness. He was in constant pain. My wife and her family were at a loss for words and did not know what to do or where to turn. It was so hard.

As we sat in the room after watching his last moments, there were so many passages that came to mind. Today’s verse was one of them. As we read this passage today, God is telling us that He has defeated four of the enemies that first entered the world in the garden. These are enemies we all will face that were defeated when Jesus came to this earth, walked among us, died, was raised from the dead and ascended to heaven. Jesus defeated death. Jesus defeated mourning. Jesus defeated crying. Jesus defeated pain. If we believe in Jesus for our salvation, we can stand assured that in that moment of last breath, we will immediately be in His presence, standing perfect before Him. Death, mourning, crying and pain will be no more, because He will have wiped them away.

I still remember that day so well. I remember the last words I heard my mother-in-law say to him: “Everything is going to be okay.” This passage tells us that God has made everything okay through Jesus. He defeated death.

  1. We will all face this in our own family or with close friends. Take this passage and mark it in your Bible so you can come to it to find strength or to strengthen others.
