37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!” 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them. — Acts 2:37-41
What Shall We Do?
by Michael Munson
Peter had just given a powerful Spirit-filled message. The people in attendance were deeply moved and asked “What shall we do?” Peter said to repent and be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Over three thousand believers were baptized that day.
If you want to follow Christ, you must repent and be baptized. To repent means to turn from sin, changing direction of your life from selfishness and rebellion against God’s laws and turning toward Christ. You also must depend on Him for forgiveness, mercy, guidance and purpose. Baptism identifies us with Christ and with a community of believers. It is a condition of discipleship and a sign of faith.
- Has God ever spoken to you through his Word or through another believer? If so, what was the outcome?
- What sins have you turned away from in your own life?
- How can we allow the Holy Spirit to help us with Christ-like behaviors and actions?
