Cuts Like A Knife

September 7, 2022

For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

In these times, it is more important than ever to keep the Word of God close to our hearts. In today’s devotion, we’ll see that God’s Word “cuts like a knife” and discover that is a good thing for our lives today.

Cuts Like A Knife

Hebrews 4:12 reveals that the Bible is sharper than any double-edged sword. In other words…God’s Word cuts like a knife. His Words are so pointed and so powerful that anything in its path is impacted. Like a skilled surgeon, God brings healing and treats our hearts by His Word. But surgery can hurt!

Just as a physical knife can pierce through flesh and bone to get to the marrow, so too can the Word of God pierce through to our very souls. It has the power to cut through the hardest of hearts and show us the way to repentance and forgiveness.

It’s Our Weapon

We can also use God’s Word as a weapon against our enemies. In Ephesians 5, we are told about the armor of God. In comparison to the attire of a Roman soldier, Paul reminds us that we also fight an enemy every day. And in putting on spiritual armor, just as we would any other article of clothing, we cover ourselves and prepare to face the day.

Part of the armor is the sword of the Spirit. This is directly compared to the Word of God. And we are told in verse 17 to take up our sword “in prayer.” This means that we can use God’s Word as a weapon against spiritual enemies, such as anger, lust, greed, envy, and jealousy. When we are armed with the Word of God, we can stand firm against any attack from the enemy.

What Now?

The Bible is a powerful tool that we can use for our own good and for the good of others. Let us never forget its importance in our lives and in this world. May the cutting process lead us to wholeness and healing.

How is the Word of God “piercing” your life? What are the enemies you are facing and how are you using the Bible as a weapon? Remember this: we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us (Romans 8:37).
