Could You Use a Little Guidance?

February 15, 2022

“The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name
and leads them out. When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The
sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

John 10:3-4

In Need of a Guide

All the best fantasy stories have this mystical—and often mysterious—guide who shows up at just the right time, often when our struggling protagonist is stuck in the direst and most turmoil-ridden of situations. This elusive guiding figure possesses a profound wisdom beyond their years and offers to our brave adventure-taker the insight that is most sought after in their greatest time of need. So, could you use a little guidance?

Our lives aren’t that magical and plot-filled, it seems. Yet we know how it feels to be needy and confused, directionless and misguided, unsure of the next step to take. If these descriptors sound like where you are today, or where you very well may find yourself tomorrow, then let me remind you that the gospel is for your ears, too.

The Gate’s Wide Open

John 10 reminds us of our Good Shepherd and Guide: Jesus. We can find no greater comfort than this reminder here in verse 3: Jesus has already swung the gate wide open for us, called us by our very names, and led us out of danger and into the space meant specifically for us—the place where life everlasting resides.

The sheep only know danger. Whether they’ve accidentally wandered into its fold or purposely strayed from the path meant for them, they’re never that far from the traps of the strangers, thieves, and robbers seeking to take away the rest that the Shepherd has already provided.

The Shepherd is Calling

So, little sheep, cling to these words of comfort. Whether you find yourself today on a scary journey with too many unmanageable twists and turns or if you’re feeling stuck in place, remember that there’s already a good Guide who has created a space for you, opened the gate so wide for you, and is calling you by your very name. There’s no room for striving and straying here. Come make your way into His rest.

If you’re anything like the rest of us, you could probably use a little—actually, a lot—of His guidance, too.

Now What?

Think about where you are on the path today. Consider those in your life who could use the encouragement and reminder of all that the Good Shepherd has already done on our behalf. Lean into the rest He provides and find a way to let those around you know where your peace comes from, too.
